The Aotearoa EdTech Data Privacy Pledge:
Your gateway to ST4S

The Aotearoa EdTech Data Privacy Pledge is a framework developed by EdTechNZ and the New Zealand EdTech community, in consultation with the New Zealand Ministry of Education, which provides standards on data privacy and security safeguards for EdTechNZ’s EdTech members to meet. This offers an ideal starting point in preparation to achieve the Safer Technologies 4 Schools (ST4S) assessment.

Who is it for?

  • EdTech companies and people who sell digital products and services in K-13 education throughout New Zealand and/or Internationally.
  • EdTech companies that aren’t ready to undertake ST4S, but want to make a commitment to acting responsibly around data privacy and security.

How it works

  1. Download the Aotearoa EdTech Data Privacy Pledge, and complete the self-assessment. Use the templates and resources in our Security Portal to help.
  2. Once you are happy you meet the requirements, sign the Privacy Pledge online (You need to be a current member of EdTechNZ to sign).
  3. Start referencing your commitment to data privacy and security as a signatory of the Privacy Pledge, on your business’s website and in customer conversations.
  4. Get ST4S assessed from a position of strength (when the time is right).
  5. Win more customers.
  6. Renew your commitment to the Pledge annually

Why sign the Privacy Pledge

  1. Save time, money and reputation: makes getting ST4S assessed less painful later on and lowers the risk of costly data breaches.
  2. Sharpen internal practices: use the Privacy Pledge to sharpen your internal practices and get ahead of more rigorous frameworks like ST4S. It’s a confidence builder for your team and your roadmap.
  3. Win customer trust, get more sales: The Privacy Pledge helps you meet rising expectations. Demonstrating your commitment to privacy and security isn’t just good practice, it’s now a competitive edge in K-13.
  4. Strengthen your Government tender proposals: an increasing number of Requests For Proposal (RFPs) in Australia require ST4S just to apply. At some stage, New Zealand is likely to follow suit. In the meantime, get ahead in your RFP proposals by signalling to Governments that your organisation takes data privacy and security seriously.

Name(Required)

More than a pledge

To assist with the completion of the self-assessment and to raise awareness of security and privacy practices, our good friends at Hail have developed a Security Portal.

The Portal contains:

  • Templates for you to use to help implement the security controls recommended. Templates can be downloaded and amended as necessary for your business.
  • Further reading on the points raised in this assessment.

It is a ‘self-managed’ portal, and it exists to assist you.
