If you’re in the business of developing ’EdTech’, you’ve probably heard about Safer Technologies for Schools (ST4S). But what exactly is it, and why is it so important for schools – and for you as a supplier?
ST4S is the trans-Tasman initiative that evaluates digital products used in schools and kura to ensure they meet privacy and security standards. This initiative is facilitated by Education Services Australia (ESA), and overseen by our Ministry of Education, alongside its Australian counterparts.
It’s designed to help schools select products that are safer, more secure, and protect student data. It also guides EdTech suppliers in supporting schools to keep students and their information safe, when they’re using their technology.
For schools, this means a lot less work. With so many digital products on the market, it’s difficult and time-consuming for schools to assess the security and privacy risks of each tool. ST4S takes that burden off their shoulders, providing clear, consistent reports detailing how software performs against key privacy and security criteria, with recommendations for risk mitigation.
For suppliers, getting your product ST4S badged is becoming essential. Schools are increasingly aware of security risks and are now prioritising tools that better protect student data, privacy and safety.
What does it mean to get ST4S badged?
Having your product ST4S badged means it’s been through a rigorous process to ensure it meets required privacy and security standards. This badge signals to schools that your product has met minimum required standards and that comprehensive privacy and security information is available to support usage in schools. It’s a clear, respected marker that gives schools and kura confidence in your tool.
Take Clifton Terrace Model School as an example. They used the ST4S assessment reports when selecting a new Student Management System (SMS) and found their preferred software lacked two-factor authentication (2FA), a key security feature. Thanks to ST4S, the school was able to negotiate with the supplier to add 2FA. Within a few months, the supplier made the changes, and the school could move forward with peace of mind.
This example highlights how ST4S helps schools make better decisions, while also giving suppliers a clear path to improve their offerings. It’s a win-win for everyone.
The Competitive Edge
Supplier products that complete the ST4S assessment process (and gain an ST4S badge) gain a clear competitive advantage. Schools are increasingly prioritising security when selecting software, and products that carry the ST4S badge stand out in a crowded marketplace. And it’s not just about compliance; it’s about showing that your product is designed with student safety in mind.
The process is also collaborative. You get detailed feedback on how your product measures up and where improvements can be made. Best of all, there’s no application fee, making it an easy step towards better market positioning.
Suppliers who have successfully completed the assessment report positive outcomes, such as increased interest from schools and improved relationships with existing clients. As one CEO of an educational software company said: “ST4S made us re-evaluate our privacy policies and security features. We came out with a stronger, more secure product, which boosted our market reputation.” Completing the ST4S process not only gives you a competitive advantage here in New Zealand but also prepares your product for the Australian market, where, in many states, it is a must-have for use in schools.
However, it’s still early days in terms of achieving a critical mass of ST4S-badged products in the New Zealand market. There’s more work to be done. That’s why collaboration is key – the Ministry wants to work with the supplier market, through EdTechNZ, to get more products assessed and badged. It’s a joint effort, and together we can move the market toward adopting ST4S as the standard for digital safety in schools.
What’s next for ST4S?
Over the next year, the Ministry will be encouraging additional local products to join the ST4S catalogue, offering schools a greater choice of Kiwi EdTech products displaying the ST4S shield. If you’re a supplier, now is the time to get involved and ensure your product is one of them.
By earning the ST4S badge, you demonstrate your commitment to security and privacy, and help schools choose the right digital tools for their classrooms – saving them time and reducing their risks.
So, what’s next for you? Embracing ST4S is a smart move if you’re looking to make an impact in the education sector. It’s free, collaborative, and puts your product in the best possible position to be trusted by schools.
